Bolsonaro arrested after being declared a flight risk
Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.
The one-time leader was convicted of planning a armed takeover in last fall and sentenced more than a 27-year term in prison, but he continued under home detention pending legal challenges.
High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after recent developments emerged.
This included attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a call for a supporters' gathering that could enable a potential flight.
Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns
In a document approving the arrest, Justice Moraes said information from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the surveillance device to ensure success in his getaway".
This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the protest called by his offspring.
His offspring, his son Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a gathering of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on the previous day: Will you battle for your homeland, or watch it all from your phone there on your sofa? I invite you to fight with us."
He said the vigil would be so supporters could offer prayers for his health and for the return of democracy in our country."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of the judge's determination was the chance of Bolsonaro's "relocation to embassies near the home, considering that the probes revealed a background of planning to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.
The judicial paperwork emphasizes that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is situated around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.
Worldwide Consequences
The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist American leader Donald Trump, causing him to impose a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.
He is being detained in a national police facility in the capital and will have a custody hearing on the following day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with tracking devices.
They also asked that Bolsonaro be allowed to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he needed regular treatment for respiratory ailments and other illnesses.
Details of Guilty Verdict
Bolsonaro was determined responsible of leading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, Lula.
Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a scheme which involved plans to kill the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been managing the former president's case.
The scheme was stopped because it failed to get the endorsement of the armed forces officials. Lula was took office without issue on 1 January 2023.
But a following week, on the eighth of January, many his followers invaded and destroyed public facilities in the federal district, Brazil's capital.
The police intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.
The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been provoked by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.
At the moment, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.
He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.
The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the 2026 national vote.
