European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
